Card Payments

Every card payment costs you something.Do you know what, and why?

Whether customers pay by card machine, online or through a payment link, the headline rate is only part of the picture. Here are five commercial questions worth understanding about your current setup.

The rate was one line. The month is another.

What are you really paying?

A quoted rate can make the cost look simple. What you actually pay depends on several things working together.

Look at the rate alongside:

  • how each transaction is priced;
  • charges per transaction, terminal or billing period;
  • how customers pay — by card machine, online or remotely through payment links.

The same quoted rate does not mean the same overall cost.

When do you actually get your money?

Taking a payment and receiving the money are two different moments.

What matters is when the funds reach you, how predictable that timing is and how clearly you can match what arrives with the payments your business has taken.

That matters to the way you manage cash flow, suppliers, wages and the day-to-day running of the business.

Cash flow is planned around when money arrives, not just when the customer pays.

The customer is waiting. The payment has to work now.

What happens when payments go wrong?

A payment problem is not just a technical problem. It can affect whether the sale completes, how long the customer waits and how much time your team spends trying to resolve it.

That might be a card machine that will not connect, an online payment that fails or a payment link that does not complete as expected.

What matters is how reliably the setup works, what your team can do when something goes wrong and how effectively support helps get the business moving again.

Reliability and support matter because payment problems affect the business, not just the technology.

How much control do you have over the arrangement?

Understanding your current setup also means knowing what you are committed to — and what options you have if your needs change.

That can include:

  • contract term and renewal;
  • notice requirements;
  • separate card-machine or hardware commitments;
  • what changing provider, equipment or setup would involve.

Adding online payments or payment links may change what the business needs, but existing commitments can still affect what you can change and when.

Freedom to change matters most when you want to use it.

Does your payment setup fit how customers pay — and where your business is going?

A setup that worked when most payments came through one card machine may not be the setup the business needs today.

Customers may now pay at the counter, online, through a payment link or away from a fixed location.

New locations, bookings, EPOS, accounting, reporting and other systems can also change what the payment setup needs to do.

The question is not simply whether the arrangement still works. It is whether it still fits the way the business trades.

Your business can change while the payment arrangement stays the same.

General information can show you what matters.

This page can show you what matters. What your own costs, settlement timing, payment routes, trading pattern and commitments mean together depends on your business.

When Prime Street reviews a Card Payments arrangement, we consider three things together:

Commercial Fit
Costs, terms and overall commercial value.
Operational Fit
Whether the setup works effectively inside the business.
Strategic Fit
Whether it remains suitable for where the business is going.

The result is a judgement about the strongest overall fit — not a score, and not simply the cheapest option in isolation.

You can have the arrangement reviewed without deciding it needs replacing.

The commercial picture

  1. What you pay depends on more than the headline rate.
  2. What you pay matters. So does when your money arrives.
  3. A strong payment setup includes what happens when something goes wrong.
  4. Your commitments are part of the payment arrangement too.
  5. The right payment setup has to fit how you trade now and what you may need next.
  6. What all of this means for your arrangement.

Change is assessed, not assumed. A Commercial Review may confirm that what you already have remains appropriate, identify ways to improve or renegotiate it, show where better integration or a change may make sense, or conclude that nothing needs to happen yet.
